Although it is rare in Phoenix, a few owners do cover their swimming pools during the winter months. In other parts of Arizona, this is much more common. In either case, there are a few things you need to know to avoid some ugly surprises in the spring.
• First, super chlorinate the pool before you cover it.
• Make sure whatever you are using covers the pool completely and that absolutely no light is getting in.
• Once day temperatures drop below 90 degrees during the day and 70 degrees at night, you can lower the amount of time your pool pump and cleaners run. For shallow pools, you can lower the run time to around 7 hours. For diving pools, the run time should be 8 -9 hours.
